When I was in art school, I learned to paint observationally from still-lifes and the figure. During a 40 year career as an illustrator, working from photo reference was a necessity. I forgot what it was like painting from life. After my first attempts outside, I realized how wrong the photo was and became amazed working under daylight—feeling atmosphere, weather and wind.
I also like the time limit imposed on me by the moving sun. In the studio I can paint forever and never feel like it's finished. The pressure of changing light forces me to commit to a single idea and try to suggest a solution. I've had plenty of failures, but I keep learning new ideas about how a painting works.
I hope you enjoy these paintings. Please contact me if you are interested in purchasing one. I sell them unframed so you have the choice of picking the best frame for your home or office.
